After being off the air for six years, it looks like there are no plans for Cold Feet to return in the near future… That is until John Thomson, who plays Pete Gifford, said that the series could return with a Gavin & Stacey-style Christmas special.

The beloved comedy-drama ran for five seasons in its original run from 1998 until 2003, with the action focusing on three couples as they navigate the ups-and-downs of romantic relationships and family life.

The series was then revived in 2016 as much of the cast reprised their respective roles, with a further four seasons airing on ITV before it began a prolonged hiatus following the finale of the ninth season.

While Thomson confirmed that there were no immediate plans to bring back the series in a full capacity anytime soon, the actor and comedian did tease that an upcoming reunion with his co-stars could see some movement on a special episode.

“We’ve got a charity lunch together: me, Jimmy [Nesbitt], Fay [Ripley] and Cel Spellman,” he said during an appearance on Radio X’s The Chris Moyles Show. “That’s in March. So, we’ll be reunited at that.”

“I think, really, on the back of something like Gavin & Stacey, I think that, rather than doing another season, a Christmas special would be a good idea,” added the star, who has also appeared in The Fast Show and Coronation Street.

Upon the finale for the ninth season in 2020, series creator and principal Mike Bullen confirmed that the comedy-drama would be off the air for the foreseeable future, mainly because they had told the story they wanted to tell.

“We feel we’ve explored to our satisfaction the issues confronting the characters at this stage of their lives,” he said. “We want to give them all a little time to move on and to put clear water between the stories we’ve told thus far.”

Bullen, who also created the Australian mystery-thriller North Shore, did tease that Cold Feet could come back in the future, adding: “We’re looking forward to returning at a later date to document the agony and the ecstasy of the third age.”

Cold Feet is available to stream on ITVX.
