This week sees the release of the third season of “The Night Agent,” Netflix’s almost “24”-esque political action thriller starring Gabriel Basso as Agent Peter Sutherland.

The show scored that third-season renewal in October 2024, two months before the show’s second season premiered in January 2025, which has allowed for the third season to premiere almost exactly a year after the first.

The same won’t be true next time, as the fate of the show’s fourth season still hasn’t been decided, with no early renewal on offer. That said, those involved in the show’s making are proceeding on the belief that it is coming and are readying to move fast if it does.

Series creator Sean Ryan tells Deadline that work on a Los Angeles-set fourth season has already made progress:

“Season 4 is not officially picked up yet, but a while ago, in calendar year 2025, they did quietly pick up a writers’ room. We’ve been working for a while on the storyline. We have some scripts, and we are breaking stories. I think you know from the tax credit, there’s a date by which you need to be filming by; there’s time for us at the moment.

…My guess is, sometime in the next [few weeks], they’ll make a decision about officially greenlighting Season 4, and if and when they do, we’ll be ready to go with the scripts so that there’s not that much time between Season 3 and Season 4. I think Netflix cares about their viewers and is looking for ways to minimize the time between the seasons of their most successful shows”

That suggests Netflix will wait to see how the third season performs in its first few days or weeks before greenlighting a fourth. One big incentive is that the California move will see the show receive a $31.6 million tax credit – provided it begins production within a six-month window.

The show’s third season pickup was a given following the first season being a smash hit for the series, with 98.2 million views in 91 days. The second season performed well, but viewership was notably down.

As for rumours about a potential spin-off, Ryan says, “There’s nothing active. My focus is on Season 4 and getting that picked up. If and when that happens, maybe I’ll investigate.”

He did confirm “an idea” was bandied about after the second season, but it was “conversations” only, no official pitch.

The third season of “The Night Agent” launches on Netflix on February 19th.
