The decision came nine months before the 2026 Rugby League World Cup following a disappointing 3-0 Ashes series whitewash against Australia

Former England head coach Shaun Wane threatened legal action against the Rugby Football League following his sudden departure last month, The i Paper understands.

The RFL claimed that Wane, who had been in charge of the national team for nearly six years, had stepped aside from his position in mid-January.

Announcing his departure on 14 January, the governing body said that Wane had “taken time to reflect on the programme and believes the timing is right for new leadership to guide the team into the next phase, including the upcoming World Cup”.

However, it is understood the 61-year-old was blindsided by the RFL’s decision to change coaches after the 3-0 Ashes whitewash, and ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup this October.

According to sources close to the situation, Wane raised the prospect of legal action over the circumstances of his departure.

Under Wane England failed to reach the final of the 2022 World Cup on home soil, after being knocked out in golden point extra-time in the semi-finals by Samoa.

The national team were then routed by Australia last November in the first Ashes series since 2003, suffering consecutive defeats in London, Liverpool and Leeds.

Wane faced heavy criticism over England’s performances, selection and tactics in the series against the Kangaroos.

Asked after the third Test loss to Australia at Headingley whether he believed he was still the right man to take England to the World Cup, Wane said: “I don’t believe – I know I am.

“The only people I want [the backing of] are the players and staff and I know I have that.

“Talks aren’t planned yet but they will be planned. We’ll do a report on the series and what we think we need to make it better. We’re all going in the same direction.”

But two months later the RFL announced that the ex-Wigan Warriors boss had “stepped aside”.

In that press release, Wane said in a statement: “It has been the honour of my life to coach England Rugby League over the last six years but after careful reflection I believe the time is right to step aside and allow the programme to move forward into its next chapter.

“The privilege of leading my country in a World Cup, an Ashes Series on home soil and securing victories over Tonga and Samoa will live long in the memory. I’m incredibly grateful to all the players, coaches and staff I’ve worked alongside during that time, their commitment and professionalism made those moments possible.

“I wish everyone involved with England Rugby League the best going forward and for the World Cup later this year.”
