Ineos’ decision to choose Michael Carrick over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has proven to be a masterstroke so far, but the situation could have been very different had the latter not ‘irritated’ the Man Utd board.

An unbeaten start to his Man Utd reign has ensured that fans have already forgotten how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was proving stiff competition to Michael Carrick.

If anything, the Norwegian’s “comeback” story had more support among a section of Man Utd fans than Carrick’s return as interim manager.

Fill in the blank. Is Carrick actually a better coach, or are we falling for the same trap again?

It seems like Solskjaer would have a good chance, had he not ‘irritated’ Ineos during the race against Carrick.

Ineos had finalised a list of three candidates to take over until the end of the season – Ruud van Nistelrooy, Michael Carrick, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Van Nistelrooy didn’t need to interview, as he had managed United for a few games after Erik ten Hag’s sacking, so it was between the latter two.

Chris Wheeler recently reported on The United Stand that Solskjaer had a lot of support in the public, but that actually worked against him.

Ineos believe his camp was lobbying for him and putting pressure on United to make a decision in his favour, which ‘irritated’ the board.

In contrast, Carrick kept things discreet, put forward his ideas directly to Ineos, and waited with patience for the club to arrive at a decision.

Wheeler said: “I don’t think the club were pleased with what was being put into the public domain from Solskjaer’s camp.

“I think the club were very impressed with the way Michael Carrick conducted himself. He went about things quietly and privately, spoke to them directly, and put forward his case in a professional manner, which they valued.

“There was some irritation, however, at what they saw as lobbying on Solskjaer’s behalf, and that wasn’t well received.”

Michael Carrick has brought the same calmness to Man Utd

Carrick has vindicated Ineos, because while nobody doubts Solskjaer’s love for the club, maybe the club needed a calm-headed professional approach instead of an emotionally charged homecoming.

Ruben Amorim had already left after increasing the temperature around the club, so the emotional whiplash from him to Solskjaer could have been brutal.

Prove me wrong: Michael Carrick has already shown enough to become permanent Man United manager.

13 points from 15 would be title winning form over a full season…

Instead, Carrick has silenced the noise around the club completely. The results have undoubtedly helped, but so has his conduct.

He has stayed away from claims of this being anything special, kept the focus of everyone on the “next game”, and batted away questions of a permanent job in a stone-cold manner.

At an emotionally charged pressure-cooker of a club like United, Carrick is exactly the kind of calm character who can act as a balancing force.

Solskjaer’s eagerness ultimately led to Ineos taking the right decision with Carrick.
