Long before Jesse Derry’s Chelsea debut against Hull City, a quiet mentorship was forming behind the scenes with Jack Grealish due to a family connection that spans years.

Jesse Derry has only been at Chelsea since the summer, but he’s already starting to make a name for himself at Cobham. His ability to create and score goals has seen his tally rise to 11 and four, respectively.

The debut performance against Hull City was short but sweet. It was enough time for Chelsea fans to see exactly what the midfielder possesses.

And Liam Rosenior certainly enjoyed what he saw, as Jesse Derry has been spotted in first-team training once again since making his debut.

His father, former footballer Shaun Derry, will be proud, as his links to the game have played a big part in the development of the teenager.

The Athletic reports that Jack Grealish has known the family since playing under father Shaun while on loan at Notts County from Aston Villa as a 17-year-old.

He’s stayed in touch with Shaun and his family, hence why Grealish congratulated Jesse after making his Chelsea debut against Hull.

His style of play is another Derry is looking to emulate. And this isn’t the first time that Grealish has sent messages to the family when Jesse has reached other milestones, like signing his scholar deal at Crystal Palace in 2023 and securing his move to Stamford Bridge.

After getting a taste of action with the first team, Derry’s focus is on continuing to work hard with the under-21s to try to get another.

And it’s stated that discussions on whether to stay put or go on loan next season have yet to take place, suggesting that it could be an ideal next move for the youngster.

While Derry has been lighting it up for the Under-21s, it would be sensible for him to go and learn his trade at a Football League side who can offer him regular minutes under his belt.

Just look at Jack Grealish, he set himself up for success as a young boy at Notts County before going on to bigger and better things.
