Jonathan Milan (Lidl Trek) won stage 4 of UAE Tour into Fujairah in a bunch sprint, taking victory from Ethan Vernon (NSN Cycling Team) – led out by Ireland’s Ryan Mullen. The stage winner’s kid brother, Matteo Milan (Groupama-FDJ United), was 3rd on a day of no change in the overall.

However, while Milan emerged the victor, it was another sprinter who generated a lot of headlines, and for the wrong reasons. The very unfortunate Fabio Jakobsen (Picnic PostNL), who suffered a horrendous crash at Tour de Pologne in 2020, hit the deck hard again today.

This time the Dutch rider, thankfully, had no life-threatening injuries, though he was cut to pieces and his kit shredded after coming down hard with just under 30km to go. He appeared to hit a stone, with his front type and foam insert coming off the rim, and wrapping around his bike.

He was using the Ursus ARYA R 50 Team Edition wheels, which are described as having a ‘mini-hook’ rim profile. The bunch appeared to be riding at speed, on a wide road, when the TV cameras picked out Jakobsen crashed on the road.

A number of other riders came down, including Ethan Hayter (Soudal QuickStep) and Daan Hoole (Decathlon CMA CGM Team), who managed to finish the stage, as did Jakobsen. However, one of the fallers – Robbe Ghys (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) was a non-finisher.

Ireland’s Eddie Dunbar (Pinarello Q36.5) and Mullen both finished in the bunch ahead of tomorrow’s stage 5, which takes the riders 168km, on flat terrain, to Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University.
