Abhishek Sharma, India’s stylish opener, sits comfortably at the no.1 spot on the ICC’s Men’s T20I batting rankings. Sharma, widely known for his early batting exploits and crisp hitting, is yet to open his account in the ongoing Men’s T20I World Cup 2026. While India’s strong run in the marquee tournament, securing four out of four wins, has put the co-hosts and the defending champions as favourites for another coveted trophy, it is Sharma’s failure to score a single run up top that has invited severe criticism and left the 25-year-old batter’s fans in a state of discomfort. And now, Sharma’s sister Komal Sharma has been dragged into the conversation regarding the cricketer’s disappointing display on the big stage.

Why exactly is Komal being targeted, you ask?

Abhishek Sharma: Three Innings, Three Misses

Sharma has appeared in three contests out of India’s four matches. In his first outing on February 7 in Mumbai against the USA, the opener returned to the hut with a golden duck. He was all geared up for India’s third encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan in Colombo after missing the second match owing to a stomach bug. Here, he was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Salman Ali Agha. During his latest walk to the field in the fourth and India’s recent match against the Netherlands, Sharma yet again departed without troubling the scorers. He was castled by spinner Aryan Dutt on the third ball of India’s innings.

Unwanted Record To Abhishek Sharma’s Name

Sharma became the second batter in the world to have secured three ducks in the first three T20 World Cup matches: 0 (1), 0 (4), 0 (3).

The opening batter has had a dull 2026 thus far, registering as many as five ducks in eight T20I innings for India this year.

“Komal Sharma Reason For Abhishek Sharma’s Downfall”

Komal Sharma, a cricket fan, is a regular attendee at the cricket stadiums to watch her brother batter the bowlers.

Her presence is now being blamed for Sharma’s silent bat in the T20 World Cup 2026.

“The main reason for the downfall of Abhishek Sharma is his sister. Whenever he goes to play, she comes for attention and does overacting. He is not some baby other players also have sisters, but they don’t do like this,” a user on X remarked.

Komal, a physiotherapy professional, has often been spotted cheering on for her brother, who plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“Kohli Was Right”

Shutting down the troll, Indian cricket fans unanimously dismissed the troubling and misogynistic comment directed at the opening batter’s sister.

India’s superstar cricketer Virat Kohli was mentioned several times by users in the tweet critical of Komal. His words, “People in our country love to blame women,” also helped bring the message home.

Kohli has time and again stood up against sexist trolls spreading vitriol especially against his partner Anushka Sharma for his failures on the cricket field. Kohli had famously asked the nameless and faceless trolls to zip it when his then-girlfriend Sharma was targeted and trolled.

“Shame on people for trolling @AnushkaSharma non-stop. Have some compassion. She has always only given me positivity,” Kohli wrote in 2016.

Will Abhishek Sharma Be Dropped From Squad?

Many have wondered if Abhishek Sharma’s concerning run in the T20 World Cup 2026 may lead to his benching in the upcoming Super 8 fixture between India and South Africa on Sunday in Ahmedabad.

The murmurs and the backdoor talks, however, have been quashed by Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel.

“Absolutely no discussion in our team group about that. He is a world-class player. So far in the tournament, luckily, we’ve had other guys standing up with Abhishek not scoring the runs you would like,” Morkel told the media.

“We’re going through a very important phase of the World Cup now, and I’m pretty sure he’s going to deliver. Not just for the team, but also for all the viewers watching the game, because he’s entertaining and we love to see that. He’s hitting the ball well in the nets. It’s just a matter of getting that start and getting his innings going,” Morkel added.
