It’s not everyday the biggest girl band in history, likened to the female Beatles, rock up in town to spice up our lives. Ok so the Spice Babes weren’t the real thing.
But in February 1998 when the Babes, who at the time were the biggest Spice Girls tribute band in Europe, came to play a show, that’s exactly what happened.
As they arrived in their stretch limo, it wasn’t long before they were issued a parking ticket. In fact, the limo was so long, the traffic warden nearly gave them two.
It wasn’t long before the warden gave up the joke, with all five girls laughing as a camera appeared out of nowhere.
The band was in town to support for a fundraiser, to support ‘wannabe’ golfer, Steven Mudford, who aspired to turn professional.
The sporty, scary, posh baby and ginger lookalikes performed at Lyme Regis Golf Club to help do their bit for the then 17-year-old’s dreams.
They were also joined by actor Dean Gaffney who played Robbie Jackson in EastEnders from 1993 to 2004.
The group pulled up in Bridport to collect prizes that were donated by local shops ready for the raffle after their performance.
The girls played for half an hour and were definitely an unusual sighting at the golf club.
The actual Spice Girls were at the time preparing for their first world tour at the peak of their fame.
They had also just attended the BRIT awards, a year after Mel C famously challenged Liam Gallagher, of Oasis, to a fight after he took jabs at the group a year before, in true Britpop fashion.
