Two Hull fly-tippers have been ordered to pay more than £1,500 each for dumping waste on the city’s streets. Hull City Council has issued a reminder to residents to dispose of waste legally or face the full force of the law following the prosecutions.

The local authority confirmed that two individuals have recently been ordered to pay a combined total of £3,144 in fines and costs after their cases were heard at Hull Magistrates’ Court. Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, condemned the illegal dumping, saying: “Fly-tipping is a crime and we do not tolerate it in Hull.

“It is unsightly, potentially harmful to human health and damaging to the environment. We urge residents to dispose of their waste in the correct way using our accessible services, schemes, and household waste centres across the city.

“We also encourage residents to report those who do not dispose of their waste legally.”

In the first case, Larisa Gociu, of Edgecumbe Street, Hull, failed to attend Hull Magistrates’ Court and was convicted in her absence of offences in contravention of section 2 Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978 and section 110(2)(b) Environment Act 1995. This prosecution was brought in response to bulky and bagged household items fly-tipped on Edgecumbe Street, and she was subsequently ordered to pay fines, costs and compensation totalling £1,616.
