This week we have a beautiful cinematic treat in the shape of Pachinko and a devastating and powerful drama about the American opioid crisis, Dopesick. There’s also a lesser-known Kiefer Sutherland thriller, Rabbit Hole, witch action in The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself and the Finnish Succession, Reindeer Mafia.

Pachinko (2022-, Apple TV)

Based on the 2017 novel by Min Jin Lee, this incredible series is a feast for the senses with some of the most beautiful cinematography you’ll see on the small screen. It tells the story of one Korean family across four generations between 1915 and 1989, initially living under Japanese occupation of Korea and later, as the family moved to Japan, as immigrants and beyond to America. An ambitious piece of television that switches timelines and stories effortlessly, it will absorb you into a poignant journey powered by love, hope and an unbreakable family connection.

Rabbit Hole (2023, ITVX)

Available to watch on Paramount+ in the US

Kiefer Sutherland stars in this enjoyable espionage thriller about a master of deception framed for murder by shadowy forces that seem to operate online. Soon, the private espionage agent is caught in a twisty game of cat and mouse. The show was created by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, known for This is Us and Crazy, Stupid, Love, and also stars Charles Dance as the apparent leader of some strange resistance unit. To say any more would spoil the fun.

Reindeer Mafia (2023, Channel 4 streaming)

Available to watch on MHz Choice in the US

This Finnish family story from Walter Presents is perfect for fans of Succession and The Sopranos. A hit in Scandinavia, this snowy show has a deliciously dark script, unusual setting and snowmobiles. An old woman’s letters and her funeral bring together the cast: a motley crew of friends, farmers, disgruntled exes, staff and what appears to be a middle-aged motorcycle gang.

Dopesick (2021, BBCiPlayer)

Available to watch on hulu in the US

This searing eight-part series from 2021 is based on the book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy. It brings alive through a gripping and beautifully crafted story the effect of the American opioid crisis on ordinary people and communities. Simultaneously it explores the role of big pharma, government agencies and those seeking to profit from the growth of drugs like OxyContin. Starring Michael Keaton, Peter Sarsgaard, Kaitlyn Dever and Will Poulter, this brilliant and powerful show is a must-watch for fans of incredible drama based on real life.

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself (2022, Netflix)

Why did Netflix cancel this excellent fantasy show after one series? Adapted from Sally Green’s Half Bad trilogy by Joe Barton (now best known for Black Doves), this eight-parter centres on two warring tribes of witches. It’s a riveting and often witty series with a touch of Harry Potter. There’s even a thrilling score by the pop group Let’s Eat Grandma. Don’t be put off by the fact it was culled — this is a gem worth savouring.
