Manchester United won 1-0 against Everton in the Premier League on Monday night. Carrick made one enforced change from the draw with West Ham as Lisandro Martinez dropped out of the squad due to injury and Leny Yoro slotted into central defence.

Benjamin Sesko came on from the bench to score the match-winner at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Slovenia international is in red-hot form and sealed an away victory with his second-half strike.

The win means United move three points clear of Chelsea and Liverpool. Here are the talking points and moments you might have missed from the game:

The man of the moment

Matheus Cunha did brilliantly to release Bryan Mbeumo on the counter-attack in the transition leading to Sesko’s goal. Mbeumo raced free from James Tarkowski to latch onto the pass. There was a sense of inevitability as Mbeumo got his head up and spotted Sesko unmarked in space. The Cameroon international put it on a plate for Sesko and he fired into the bottom corner.

The United fans who had made the trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium were treated to a winner by the away end, and Mbeumo made the supporters aware of who was to credit for their celebrations by pointing at Sesko. Mbeumo continued to hold his arm out until the remainder of his teammates joined the celebrations.

Sesko is the man of the moment, and Mbeumo’s gesture was an appreciation of the striker, who scored his sixth goal in seven games to seal a fifth win for Carrick since his appointment.

Amad frustration

The expectation was that Sesko would start at Everton after scoring against West Ham, but Carrick gave the front three of Cunha, Mbeumo and Amad another chance on Merseyside.

Everton played similarly to West Ham, dropping back to defend, and the problems United suffered when trying to create attacks were seen again at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

United banked on intricate play around Everton’s box to fashion chances, but the Toffees were able to get bodies back. The attack rotated too often. It was too complicated.

There was a moment when Amad showed his frustration by waving his arms out and shaking his head as Fernandes came inside with a pass instead of attempting to find him on the right. Fernandes could not be blamed because the pass was not on, which was the story of the first half.

Amad had another below-par performance. He has not contributed a goal or an assist since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, but he was still serenaded by the away section when he came off in the 57th minute. Carrick simply cannot start Amad over Sesko this weekend.

Casemiro not at his best

Casemiro had an opportunity to create the most clear-cut chance of the first half when Everton were caught on the back foot after their own corner. The Brazilian had to squeeze the ball through Everton players to send Mbeumo one-on-one with Jordan Pickford, but it was a makeable pass.

However, his attempt was overhit, opening the door for Pickford to rush out of his goal and clear the danger. Casemiro reacted by standing with his hands on his hips for a few seconds.

Everton regularly got players back to defend in numbers, and Casemiro was disappointed with his pass because he knew such chances against teams that play deep tend to be scarce.

Casemiro celebrated his 34th birthday on Monday, and his performance was exactly what you would expect from a player that age: inconsistent. He made a few brilliant passes, along with some poor contributions.

The classy gesture

As the players returned to the dressing room after wrapping up their warm-up to prepare for the game, a young United mascot stood pitchside. Steve Holland spotted the boy, made an effort to speak to him and made sure the players acknowledged him as they left the pitch. It was a classy touch from Holland to make sure the mascot was introduced to the squad.

Joshua Zirkzee also spent time with the young mascot. Newcastle were forced to investigate an incident at the start of the month when their young mascot was not acknowledged by any of their players, and there was a similar incident in Chelsea’s FA Cup victory over Hull recently.

It was brilliant to see Holland and Zirkzee ensuring that did not happen with United’s mascot.
