Hejira, a seven-piece group led by guitarist Pete Oxley, has been touring Britain and Ireland with a show dedicated to the music of Joni Mitchell, focusing especially on the material performed during her 1980 live album Shadows and Light.
They are coming to Barrow Town Hall on Friday March 27, 2026.
Originally intended as a one-off concert, the project has grown into a full-scale touring band.
Since their first performance in Oxford in 2023, audience demand has taken Hejira to major venues and festivals across Britain and Ireland.
Their summer return to the Oxford Playhouse marked their 100th show and played to a sell-out show.
The group has also appeared at the EFG London Jazz Festival at The Cockpit in Marylebone, where they recorded for a live album, and they annually sell out at the Jazz Café in Camden.
Their debut album, Live @ The Cockpit, is available on CD and in a new format developed by Oxley called LSL, which stands for ‘Look. Scan. Listen.’
LSL combines the old-school glory of liner notes, lyrics, and images, with the current technology of streaming.
Hejira’s release is a 32-page hardback book featuring lyrics, notes, and images.
Each song has two dedicated pages and a QR code for listening.
The whole album can be played as ‘The Long Play’, with all the usual choices to skip, fast forward, repeat etc., and there is a bonus page with videos.
The album features 12 tracks including Coyote, Woodstock, Free Man In Paris, Black Crow, and A Case Of You.
The band comprises Hattie Whitehead on vocals and guitar, Ollie Weston on saxophones, Chris Eldred on keyboards, Pete Oxley on guitar, Dave Jones on bass, Rick Finlay on drums, and Marc Cecil on percussion.
Their musicianship and heartfelt interpretation have earned high praise from audiences and peers alike.
The show is described as a tribute to “arguably, the greatest singer-songwriter of the 20th century.”
The musicians perform with a shared respect and enthusiasm for Mitchell’s body of work.
The project grew out of a shared admiration among the band members, many of whom are highly experienced, world-class musicians in their own right.
