She said the force had reflected and learned from what happened.

“This learning included a complete review of all policies and procedures around attendance at unexplained deaths as we take steps to try and prevent something like this happening again,” she added.

In a witness statement read by the judge, Low’s partner Pamela Curran said she “feels sad every day”.

The court heard that she no longer goes out after dark, and that her closest friend had told her: “The spark has gone out of your eyes.”

Campbell was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow after a 15-day trial. The jury delivered a non-unanimous verdict after three days of deliberations.

The verdict closes a dark chapter that brought fear and suspicion to the close-knit town.

Low’s body was discovered, with his dog Millie by his side, on the morning of 17 February 2024.
