Man on the Run ( Prime Video)
Morgan Neville’s film charts Paul McCartney’s life after the break-up of the Beatles, from fixing up a cottage in Scotland to starting the new band Wings. Featuring interviews with the man himself, Linda McCartney’s atmospheric photography and family memories, and home footage, this is an intimate and touching account of a man trying to go back to basics and working out what’s next.
Jurassic World: Rebirth (Now)
Available on Peacock in the US
The dinosaur franchise got back on track with this seventh instalment, directed by Gareth Edwards, the man behind big-screen epics Rogue One and The Creator, and with a script penned by David Koepp, who wrote the first two Jurassic Parks. Scarlett Johansson stars as a mercenary who joins a covert ops team returning to an island to collect DNA from three mutant dinosaurs in the hope of developing a heart medicine for Big Pharma. Jonathan Bailey plays a nervous palaeontologist, and Mahershala Ali joins the cast as a former US Marine, but let’s face it, the true stars are the beasts, which, especially in the end, are exactly how you would want them: massive and terrifying.
The Bluff (Prime Video)
Land ahoy! Priyanka Chopra stars in this swashbuckling adventure film, produced by the Russo brothers. Set in the 19th-century Caribbean, the movie tells the story of a former pirate trying to protect her family on a remote island. But everything gets ruined when a vengeful former captain returns to spoil her tranquillity. This is a tale of revenge, retribution and the seas.
Dead of Winter (Paramount +)
Available on Max in the US
Brian Kirk’s thriller stars Emma Thompson as a grief-stricken widow who, during a snowstorm, stops at a nearby cabin to ask for directions. Before she knows it, she’s caught in a fight to stop a husband-and-wife team, played by Marc Menchaca and Judy Greer, who have kidnapped a woman. This is exactly the sort of psychological thriller you might want to dive into on a Saturday night.
Marty Supreme (buy/rent)
Timothée Chalamet is the Oscar frontrunner for Josh Safdie’s chaotic comedy drama, now available to rent from the comfort of your sofa. The actor plays Marty Mauser, a smooth-talking shoe salesman and hustler who is loosely based on table tennis champion Marty Reisman. He’s a man in the pursuit of greatness, whatever it takes. It’s an utterly gripping journey, with one particular jaw-dropping scene involving a dog, a bathtub and a New York hotel room. A mesmerising watch.
