Time is running out for Tiger Woods to decide on captaining Team USA at the 2027 Ryder Cup, with the PGA of America viewing the 15-time major winner as their sole choice for the role.

Woods was the leading contender to helm the American side at Bethpage Black last year, but turned down the opportunity, citing his obligations with the PGA Tour. Those responsibilities continue, and the 50-year-old has voiced concerns about whether he could properly fulfill the captaincy role at Adare Manor in Ireland next year.

The Americans have dropped the last two Ryder Cups, including the most recent loss on home turf to Luke Donald’s European squad in New York. The team is in urgent need of rejuvenation after Europe demonstrated markedly stronger leadership and strategic planning in the previous two competitions.

Keegan Bradley, who captained the losing side at Bethpage, faced widespread criticism for his choices, from the puzzling course configuration to some questionable player combinations.

Woods holds a less-than-stellar Ryder Cup record by his exceptional standards. His match statistics show a negative balance, and he claimed victory in only one of the eight Ryder Cups in which he competed, reports the Mirror US.

However, there’s little question he would earn the admiration of his players and present a formidable challenge for the European team. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the PGA of America is eager for him to take the helm.

According to the Associated Press, the PGA of America has established a “soft deadline” for Woods to make his decision on accepting the position. The organization wants his answer before the Masters tees off in April.

The Ryder Cup captaincy has evolved into an increasingly intensive position in recent years, with preparation and strategic analysis now taken far more seriously – as demonstrated by Donald’s consecutive leadership of the European squad.

Woods’ significant responsibilities with the PGA Tour, which he has prioritized as his playing days wind down, leave him uncertain whether he can balance those commitments alongside the Ryder Cup captaincy.

Woods serves as vice chairman of the PGA Tour Enterprises board and also holds positions as a player-director on the policy board and chairman of the Future Competition Committee.

These responsibilities have consumed much of Woods’ time over the last year as he’s been recovering from Achilles and back injuries, and his workload shows no signs of easing, with the tour currently implementing major changes to its schedule.

“I’m trying to figure out what we’re trying to do with our tour,” Woods explained at The Genesis Invitational last week. “That’s been driving me hours upon hours every day and trying to figure out if I can actually do our team – Team USA and our players and everyone that’s going to be involved in the Ryder Cup – if I can do it justice.”

Describing the extent of his PGA Tour commitments, he noted: “I thought I spent a lot of hours practicing in my prime. It doesn’t even compare to what we’ve done in the boardroom.”

Woods might be able to delay the decision temporarily, but the PGA of America must finalize its approach for Adare Manor without further delay.

The organization has faced criticism for its management of Team USA in recent years, and scrutiny will intensify if the squad appears unprepared for the formidable task of competing against the Europeans on foreign soil, where the Americans haven’t secured victory since 1993.
