Birmingham City defender Kai Wagner will be assessed today after suffering a worrying shoulder injury in last night’s defeat to Millwall.

Wagner had to be replaced midway through the second half of Blues’ 3-0 loss at The Den and Chris Davies admitted that ‘it doesn’t look too promising’.

The left-back lost out in a challenge with Millwall’s Ryan Leonard and appeared to be in considerable discomfort after landing.

Wagner was treated on the pitch by physio Pete Shaw and he was able to move his shoulder, albeit it was too painful for him to continue. Ethan Laird replaced him for the final 25 minutes.

Asked about Wagner’s injury, Davies said: “I don’t know if it’s a dislocation but it’s a heavy whack and it doesn’t look too promising right now. We will find out more information about that in the morning.”

Blues midfielder Paik Seung-ho is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury and has opted to delay surgery to help his club in their quest to reach the play-offs, and play his part in South Korea’s World Cup campaign.

Losing Wagner for any length of time would be a blow given the lack of a natural replacement in Blues’ squad at the moment.

Alex Cochrane is out until at least April with an ankle issue and Lee Buchanan is being eased back in after 14 months out with a serious ACL injury.

Laird, who has just returned from a hamstring injury himself, is the obvious replacement for Wagner but Davies also has the option of using left-footed centre-back Jack Robinson at left-back again.
