The list is led by an Australian legend, often hailed as the greatest batter of all time, followed by a South African whose best years were cut short by apartheid. They, along with a West Indian and an Englishman, are the only ones to average over 60.

England and Australia, the oldest Test-playing nations, understandably have the most number of batters in this list, with eight each. A Sri Lanka batting behemoth is the only batter in the top 10 of this list to have made his Test debut in the 2000s.
