Jim Carrey appeared almost unrecognizable when he arrived at the 51st César Awards, sparking a wave of social media reactions about his noticeably changed face. The 64-year-old comedy legend was honored with an Honorary César in Paris on Thursday night, held at the famed L’Olympia, a celebration of his extensive career in film. Despite the heartfelt nature of the tribute, much of the buzz online focused on Carrey’s striking appearance rather than the award itself.
Carrey delivered an emotional speech dedicating the honor to his late father. ‘I wanted to recognize my dad. I mean, my dad was the type of person that if you met him for five minutes, you felt like you knew him for 50 years,’ he shared in a clip that quickly went viral after the ceremony. Yet, within minutes of his red carpet appearance, fans took to social media questioning whether the actor had undergone cosmetic procedures, with some even speculating about the possibility of a mask. Comments ranged from observations that he appeared to have “had a lot of work done to his face” to more blunt remarks like, “Surgery effects are starting to show.” One fan even asked, “Is he wearing a mask? Look at his neck.” Comparisons to figures like Bill Maher and Kris Jenner’s recent facelift were also made.
Despite the chatter about his look, many supporters seized the moment to celebrate Carrey’s distinguished career and his contributions to beloved films such as The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Liar Liar, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The event was also a family affair, as the actor was accompanied on the red carpet by his daughter Jane, 38, her teenage son Jackson, and his partner Min Ah, whom Carrey acknowledged fondly during his speech, delivered entirely in French. “Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever. Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah,” he said. “I love you, Min Ah.” The timing of his relationship with Min Ah remains private.
This appearance itself marked a rare public event for Carrey, who took a noticeable break from leading roles in film for four years. After resurfacing as the mischievous Dr. Robotnik in 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, whispers about retirement emerged. In April 2022, while promoting the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sequel, he surprised audiences by suggesting that he was likely stepping back from acting. “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” he admitted, adding that he would only reconsider if offered a script “written in gold ink.” Carrey expressed his preference for a quieter life devoted to painting and spirituality, stating, “I feel like – and I feel like this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.” Nevertheless, he returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, joking that financial reasons played a part in his comeback, and he is slated to return again in Sonic 4, expected in 2027.
During the ceremony, a moment of reflection was shared by director Michel Gondry, paying tribute to their collaboration on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Carrey also spoke poignantly of his roots, recounting his great-great-great-great-grandfather Marc François Carrey’s migration from Saint-Malo in France to Canada centuries ago. “Tonight, with this magnificent honour, this ‘square’ has come full circle. Perhaps this is what my family was looking for,” he said.
