Imagine being caged for 27 years. Now, imagine not seeing the sunlight in all of that time. Can you even picture it? Sadly, that has been the reality of a bear named Sen until Animals Asia stepped in to help him. Animals Asia is a nonprofit organization that helps to rescue bears like Sen and fight against various forms of animal cruelty throughout Asia. With their help, Sen is experiencing nature in a way he hasn’t in decades.
The Dodo (@thedodo) shared a very special video documenting this bear’s story on Instagram. The video’s on-screen text tells us, “Sen was taken from the wild as a baby and spent 27 years in a tiny cage so they could extract his bile for traditional medicine.” How horrible for this poor bear!
Thankfully, Animals Asia was able to intervene. In the first clip of the video, we get to experience one of the first times Sen has seen the sky since being held captive. Fair warning: this moment will have you tearing up and reaching for a box of tissues!
Just look at his face! He can’t believe what he’s seeing after so many years of being in a cage. And people who’ve watched this video are just as in awe of this moment.
Commenter @hans.kamman wrote, “The look on their faces when they are free,” and they weren’t the only ones stunned by this bear’s joy. @dgboda replied to that and added, “And just sniffing away at the fresh air of freedom. 🐻🙏💔I hope the others get rescued.”

Many people were heartbroken for Sen and other bears that are being held captive. @lily.efflorescence said, “OMG, what this bear has been through 💔😢. So glad bile farming is illegal now…” That may be true, but there is more work to be done.
150 More Moon Bears Need Rescuing
Sen was fortunate enough to get a happy ending. From the video, we know that he’s able to experience nature again and play and interact with other bears. But more bears need help. The video text explained that, “Bile farming is now illegal in Vietnam, but 150 moon bears are still waiting to be freed.”
Toward the end of the video, the captions expressed, “Animals Asia is still fighting so every remaining moon bear in captivity can finally see the sun just like Sen.” If you’re interested in learning more about them or how you can help them rescue bears like Sen, check out their website. All bears deserve to be just as free as Sen is in this clip!
