The 65-year-old said: “I heard this almighty scraping. I opened my gates and saw this white car on the other side of the road. I heard this lady screaming.

“The BMW had ended up about 400 yards down the road. I went over to the Citroen and tried to open the door but I couldn’t get it to work.

“I went around to the passenger side and there was smoke everywhere. I just wanted to get her out. I grabbed hold of her and managed to pull her out.”

He added: “The first thing she said was, ‘oh no, I’ve missed my appointment’. She must’ve been [in shock].”

The local said a former nurse, who lives nearby, was helping the woman as he cleared debris which had scattered across the street following the smash.

“If it had been a bit busier, god knows what would’ve happened,” he said. “I’ve been living here for 20 years but it’s gone absolutely mad this last six years or so. It’s crazy on this road.

“Chaps on motorbikes and scooters, doing wheelies, no helmets. Police are doing the best they can, but to apparently no avail.

“It’s a long road and they’ve got traffic calming measures down by the school. But there’s a stretch where it’s a long road and [drivers] put their foot down.”
