Newcastle United host Manchester United on Wednesday in what is now a must-win game for Eddie Howe and his players. After the dismal 3-2 defeat at home against Everton on Saturday, the Magpies are in desperate need of three points.
Wallsend-born Michael Carrick will bring his Man United side to St James’ Park on an impressive run which has seen them move up to third in the Premier League under the caretaker manager. They enjoyed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday but it came at a cost.
England international Luke Shaw has had a resurgence in form under Carrick but he was forced off in the first half. The left-back had been caught late on the top of his foot by Daniel Munoz in an earlier duel.
And after the break, fellow defender Harry Maguire was substituted with an injury issue, with Carrick offering updates on him and Shaw after the game.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have their own injury concerns although Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento are closing in on potential returns. Here’s the Man United injury list ahead of the game at St James’ on Wednesday night.
Luke Shaw
During the first half against Palace, Shaw was forced off with what looked to be a foot injury following a collision with Daniel Munoz. Carrick later confirmed illness had been plaguing him.
What Carrick said: “He just wasn’t well. He was ill. We’ll see how he recovers. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”
Possible return date: N/A.

Harry Maguire

What Carrick said: We’ll see with Harry. Hopefully he’ll be ready for Wednesday. I thought the boys who came on did really well for us and we needed it.”
Possible return date: N/A.
Lisandro Martinez
Martinez has now missed Man United’s last two games because of injury, but it does not look to be a big problem for the defender although the Newcastle game will potentially come too soon for his return.
What Carrick said: “We will have to wait and see. He is close and he is not far away, but it is hard to say at the moment.”
Possible return date: Aston Villa (H) – March 15.
Mason Mount
Mount not played for United since mid-January with injury problems resulting in him playing just 30 minutes since Boxing Day. He is however, close to being back available for selection. It looks unlikely that he will make the trip to St James’ Park, however.
What Carrick said: “Mason (Mount) is getting closer, he’s on the grass, he’s looking to train and be around it. We’ve just had to be patient, really.
Possible return date: Aston Villa (H) – March 15.
Mattijs De Ligt
A back injury has seen De Ligt absent for the last three months but there is some hope he will be back fairly soon.
What Carrick said: “Matthijs (De Ligt) has had a back issue, which has been a little bit sore to progress, really. He’s heading in the right direction.”
“It’s the nature of the injury, the issue in the back, it’s a difficult one to pin down time wise. He’s definitely improving.”
Possible return date: Aston Villa (H) – March 15.
