Martin’s dismal spell in Govan yielded just five wins in 17 matches in all competitions
Ex Rangers manager Russell Martin
Clyde 1 presenter Gordon Duncan has revealed he was once subjected to an expletive outburst from Russell Martin during the early stages of his doomed spell as Rangers manager.
Former Southampton and Swansea boss Martin was appointed as Philippe Clement’s permanent successor in June 2025 shortly after Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises completed their takeover at Ibrox. However, his tenure in the dugout proved to be disastrous one and Martin was given the boot back in October after a dismal run of just five wins from 17 games in all competitions.
He was quickly replaced by Danny Rohl, who has got Gers back into title contention and into the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup, where they face city rivals Celtic on Sunday a week on from their dramatic 2-2 draw in the Premiership.
Gordon – who also works for Sky Sports – covered the majority of Martin’s press conferences during his ill-fated stint in Govan and has shared an occasion where the ex Scotland international took particular exception to the wording of one of his questions in the lead up to Rangers‘ Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos.
Duncan had asked Martin about the importance of getting a victory over two legs so soon after taking the job and reveals that the Rangers boss pulled him up on the wording of his questioning before a one-on-one interview ahead of another match.
Speaking on Open Goal, he said: “The next time I went up (to interview him), it was just one-to-one and I introduced myself as Gordon from Sky.
“He said, ‘I know who you are, you asked the f*****g worst question the other day about it being f*****g season-defining. Do me a f*****g favour’.
“He was kind of laughing while making his point.
“Because he was being so relaxed about it, I asked what would happen if they were humiliated in the qualifiers.
“He told me that nobody will give a f**k (as long as) they won the league in May. That turned out not to be such a good prediction, but that then removed every barrier between us.”
