Manchester United have opened talks over a summer move for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports in Spain.

The Old Trafford side have reportedly identified the Brazilian as another option alongside long-standing targets Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, as they look to replace Casemiro at the end of his contract.

United have reportedly made contact with Guimaraes’ entourage to gauge his interest in joining, but face a difficult task in convincing Newcastle to sell.

The Magpies are reluctant to sell the £100m-rated midfielder, especially to a Premier League rival, but their stance could change if they fail to secure Champions League football this season.

According to Spanish publication AS, Manchester United have a number of midfield targets ahead of the summer window and are already making efforts towards new signings.

The Red Devils have reportedly made contact with both Guimaraes and his Newcastle team-mate Sandro Tonali, who could be on the move after being linked with a surprise departure in January.

While United are anticipated to be in the mix for the Italian, AS claims Casemiro has personally recommended his compatriot Guimaraes amid the ‘world-class’ 28-year-old’s impressive campaign at St James’ Park.

Guimaraes, whom Michael Carrick said loves ‘winding the fans up’, has arguably been Newcastle’s best player this season, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in 23 Premier League appearances.

With Casemiro confirming he will be leaving United at the end of his contract in June, the Red Devils face a difficult task in replacing the Brazilian this summer.

The 34-year-old has remained a key player for United in his last season at Old Trafford, registering seven goal involvements in 26 appearances.

United may end up signing more than one midfielder in the upcoming window, as there is also uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s future at the club.

The Uruguayan has made just seven Premier League starts for United this season, with his last appearance in the first XI coming at the start of January.

Should Man Utd Pursue Guimaraes or Tonali?

Sandro Tonali in action for Newcastle United against Manchester United in the Premier League

Amid United’s interest in the Newcastle duo, we asked ChatGPT whether the Red Devils should pursue Guimaraes or Tonali:

Bruno Guimaraes – More complete midfielder, stronger ball progression and leadership, better suited to raising Manchester United’s level immediately.

Sandro Tonali – Disciplined, press-resistant and tactically sharp, but less creative and influential in possession.

Verdict – United should prioritise Guimaraes if finances allow; Tonali is a safer, lower-impact alternative.
