Portugal boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed Rangers hero Youssef Chermiti is on his radar for a shock World Cup call-up.

The £8million former Everton star scored a spectacular volley in the Old Firm showdown at the weekend, which has been rated as one of the best-ever goals in the fixture. Chermiti is a key member of the Portugal Under 21s team and he is due to be in their squad when they play Scotland at the end of this month in Amadora in a Euro 2027 qualifier.

But Martinez has now revealed Chermiti is one of four young players he is following, with Portugal due to play two friendlies this month against Mexico in Mexico City and the USA in Atlanta. And he is also monitoring former Rangers flop Fabio Silva, along with Francisco Conceicao at Juventus and Rodrigo Mora at Porto.

Martinez said: “It’s important to keep the door open to new talent in the national team. In that respect, we are looking at Francisco Conceicao, Rodrigo Mora and Fabio Silva. Youssef Chermiti at Rangers is another player who is doing well. Each player’s current form is important, but their contribution across a whole season should not be forgotten. The conditions are right for us to have a very good World Cup, but the preparations are so important.”

Chermiti netted his ninth league goal in 12 starts for Rangers against Celtic on Sunday and has scored two goals in four appearances for Portugal Under 21s.

Silva, who was at Rangers on loan from Wolves last season, scored four goals for Rangers in 12 league starts and is now at Borussia Dortmund, where he started their weekend defeat to Bayern Munich.
