Scream 7’s Ghostface actor has opened up on the film’s divisive killer reveal. The latest Scream film has been mired in controversy since the exit of lead stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, as well as original director Christopher Landon.

Since arriving in cinemas, the film has received mostly negative reactions from fans and critics alike. It currently holds a 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, setting an unwanted record for the horror franchise.

Among the complaints about Scream 7 is the rehashing of many plots we’ve seen in previous instalments, including this film’s reveal of the Ghostface killers – escaped Fallbrook patient Karl Gibbs (Kraig Dane), Fallbrook supervisor Marco (Ethan Embry), and finally, Sidney’s neighbour Jessica Bowden (Anna Camp).

Following the divisive reveal, Embry has opened up about discovering he was going to be one of the iconic slasher franchise’s villains.

“I wasn’t gonna be presumptuous. I had suspicions,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I was like, ‘It’s possible,’ but I didn’t ask any questions, didn’t wanna rock any boat.”

When he went into the wardrobe to try on his costumes, he saw that one of them was Ghostface’s iconic cloak and mask.

“I was like, ‘You’re kidding me?'” he recalled. “And the costume supervisor was like, ‘You didn’t know?!’ I had no idea.”

He added: “I didn’t wanna believe it until it was real, you know? Cause it’s huge. Over Halloween, I’m sitting here at the house trick or treating, and it’s crazy how many little Ghostface kids there are. Like, dozens!”

Embry also revealed that he auditioned for a role in Wes Craven’s original film, but did not get the part.

Scream 7 sees the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, whose life is turned upside down when a fresh batch of Ghostfaces return and target her teenage daughter, Tatum (Isabel May), forcing her and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) to confront their dark pasts.

Scream 7 is in cinemas now.
