St Helens head coach Paul Wellens has spoken about his future at the club with the 45-year-old out of contract at the end of the year.
Wellens was appointed as the head coach of his boyhood club ahead of the 2023 season and marked his first competitive game with a win in the World Club Challenge as Saints upset the odds Down Under against Penrith.
To date, it’s the only piece of silverware that the Red Vee have won under Wellens with the trophies of late being dominated by Saints’ bitter rivals Wigan Warriors.
Wellens signed a one-year contract extension last August with that announcement coming ahead of Round 21 in Super League, when St Helens sat fourth with 24 points.
We are currently heading into Round 21 of the 2025 Super League season with St Helens sitting in fourth, albeit with two more points than this stage last season.
That contract is now winding down and the St Helens boss was asked about his future at his pre-match presser, ahead of Friday’s game against Wakefield Trinity.
St Helens boss gives contract update
“It’s not happened yet, no,” Wellens confirmed to Serious About Rugby League when asked about contract conversations.
However, he did confirm that some talks had been held regarding the future of the club as he played his cards close to his chest.
The St Helens boss explained: “We’ve been in discussions, not one way or the other, just around obviously the future and what it could potentially look like.
“I’ve got the utmost trust and faith in Mike (Rush) and Eamonn (McManus) as people and I know that’s reciprocated.
“Honest conversations will be had moving forward and when a decision has been made on where my future lies or any contract situation, we’ll be sure to let you know.”
St Helens look well on course to extend their record of never missing the Super League play-offs but they’re set for a crunch game this week with a win over sixth-placed Wakefield, particularly considering that third plays fifth when Leigh host Leeds on Thursday night.
✌️ Two games against Wakefield to come this week!
