A burst water main has led to the closure of a school in Wales and left hundreds of residents without water. The water main burst on Thursday on Rhyl’s H-bridge, where council work is taking place, and continues to affect the area on Friday.
The incident happened on Thursday afternoon which led to residents being without water in their homes in Rhyl. Workers carrying out resurfacing work to the H-bridge on behalf of Denbighshire council disturbed equipment relating to the water supply mains, causing issues in the area.
Christ the Word Catholic School has closed on Friday due to the water main disturbance. A school statement reads: “The water leak on the H-bridge yesterday has had a significant impact upon our water tank.
“Despite our best efforts since late last night and early this morning we cannot safely open the site for pupils today. School will be open as normal on Monday.”

Whilst Dwr Cymru Welsh Water responded to the burst main and predicted the supply would return to normal by 7pm on Thursday, households are still affected.
Dwr Cymru has said customers in Rhyl may still experience discoloration in their water supply until 12pm on Friday.
A spokesperson for Denbighshire council said: “We understand contractors carrying out resurfacing work to the H-bridge in Rhyl on behalf of the council have disturbed equipment relating to the water supply mains and this has caused an issue with escaping water.”
A spokesperson for Dwr Cymru said: “Following third party damage to a water main on the H-Bridge in Rhyl yesterday afternoon our crews worked hard to reconfigure the network and isolate the damaged section of pipe so supplies could be restored by 9pm on Thursday.”While this was done work also started on the repair. That was completed at around 2.30am on Friday. While supplies are restored some customers may notice some discolouration. We would like to thank customers for bearing with us during this time.”
