Channel 4’s streaming service – variously known over the years since its launch in November 2006 as 4oD, All 4 and now, rather unhelpfully, simply Channel 4 – describes itself as “the UK’s biggest free streaming site”.
With, at the time of writing, over 2,200 shows available, there is plenty to choose from, although the channel’s early days are, perhaps understandably, a little under-represented. Within are, quite simply, some of the finest British TV programmes ever broadcast, reflecting the channel’s remit to champion unheard voices and to innovate and take bold creative risks. The service is free to use, with adverts. For those who want to watch ad-free, and see some programmes before they’re officially released, you can subscribe for £39.99 a year, or £3.99 a month.
The question is, where to start? Luckily, we’ve scoured the collection for the very best Channel 4 has to offer.
How did we select our 40?
We’ve infiltrated every corner of Channel 4’s service to uncover what we think are the 40 best selections, cross-referencing with our own archive of television reviews and the Telegraph TV team’s keenly held opinions. To aid you still further, we’ve split our selection into five categories and, where possible, pulled in a review or feature related to the show in question.
