Ladybridge Surgery, on Broadgate, is the subject of a public consultation being led by Bolton Community Practice CIC, which operates four surgeries across the borough.

The practice says long-standing problems with the building have raised serious questions about its long-term viability.

A spokesperson for Ladybridge Surgery said: “It is an old building which has had numerous issues in recent years, including multiple leaks and anti-social behaviour.

“In recent years, we have had to close the surgery or reduce our clinical capacity due to leaks or damage caused by leaks.

“The building is no longer suitable for delivering high-quality patient care, is too small to meet future demand, and would require major refurbishment to comply with current healthcare building standards.”

The surgery was forced to close for a number of days in 2024 after a leak.

A review by the local Integrated Care Board (ICB) in 2023 confirmed the premises are in need of replacement.

The practice has now launched a consultation to gather views from patients and stakeholders on possible options, which could include relocating services.

The survey will close on Friday, March 27, 2026.

Cllr Anne Galloway described the situation as “extremely disappointing” and is writing letters to residents to encourage them to respond to the consultation.

She told The Bolton News: “It is extremely disappointing to hear that the Bolton Community Practice are considering moving this surgery out of the premises on Ladybridge where it has been serving the community for decades.

“So many residents are dependent on it especially if they are elderly and haven’t a car as there are no alternative surgeries close by.

“It would be a big loss to the community and I hope they reconsider when they realise the strength of local feeling.”

Cllr Andy Morgan, who represents Heaton, Lostock and Chew Moor, said the future of the surgery was a matter of “real concern”.

He said: “The surgery has served the community for many years and for a lot of people, particularly older residents and those with mobility issues, having a local GP surgery within the estate is extremely important.

“I understand that the survey currently being circulated is part of the process to gather views from patients and local residents about the possible closure of the existing surgery building and the potential relocation of services.

“Ward councillors’ priority is ensuring that residents continue to have access to high-quality GP services.

“Any proposal that could result in the loss of a local facility on the Ladybridge estate needs to be carefully considered with full transparency about what it would mean for patients and how access to care would be maintained.

“I would strongly encourage anyone who uses the surgery or who may be affected by the proposals to take part in the survey and make their views known.

“Local healthcare provision is too important for the community not to have a say in its future.”

Bolton Community Practice CIC runs surgeries in Horwich, Little Lever, Ladybridge and at Waters Meeting Health Centre.

Patients registered with the practice can attend appointments at any of the sites.

The outcome of the consultation will help determine the future of Ladybridge Surgery and the services provided to patients in the area.
