A year after Vingegaard crashed out of Paris-Nice, it was Ayuso’s turn to abandon after a fall amid horrible conditions as Vingegaard took control while sporting unusual attire.

Horrible weather in central France helped turn Paris-Nice on its head on Wednesday as Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) abandoned the race while wearing the leader’s jersey after crashing heavily. About an hour later, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) – who of course crashed out of last year’s race on a similarly dismal day – stormed to the stage 4 win and the GC lead.
About as remarkable as Vingegaard’s powerful surge clear in the final kilometer was his attire at the finish line, as the two-time Tour de France winner arrived in Uchon with the straps of his tights over top of his jersey. Sporza reported that Vingegaard’s teammate Victor Campenaerts helped remove the chamois from a pair of tights that Vingegaard then wore over top of another set of shorts.
“We did expect a crazy day but definitely not like it ended up,” Vingegaard said later. “We had a plan, we wanted to try to go already on the second to last climb, but everything from the start was just full gas racing. There was not even time to take clothes off. Maybe you can call me a trendsetter with the long pants but there was no time to take it off.”
