It is not often that you see riders crashing uphill but when you ride as fast as some of the strongest climbers in the world then anything is possible. Today the two main favourites to win the Vuelta a Burgos, Isaac del Toro and Giulio Ciccone, have crashed with only a few meters to the line.
It was a far from ideal start of the race to both of them, both riders who distanced the rest of the field in the climb to Erlaitz at the recent Clásica San Sebastián. Both riders excel in the explosive ascents and were fighting for the stage win this afternoon.
After Jordan Labrosse launched his attack in the cobbled ascent to the castle he was followed by Roger Adrià , and then Isaac del Toro tried closing the gap. In a corner with 300 meters to go, the Mexican went down, and Ciccone who was in his wheel wasn’t able to avoid falling over as well – as shown in the video below.
Del Toro crossed the finish line in a large group 11 seconds after the stage winner but Ciccone seemed to suffer more damage and crossed the line 1:27 minutes after.
