The upcoming reboot of Malcolm in the Middle has finally dropped its first full trailer, and it includes a first glimpse at the brand-new Dewey. Original actor Erik Per Sullivan has retired from acting since the sitcom’s initial run, leaving a vacancy for a different face to take over the role.

Frankie Muniz is back in the lead role for the new series, officially titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, with familiar faces like Bryan Cranston (Hal), Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), Christopher Masterson (Francis), Justin Berfield (Reese) and Emy Coligado (Piama) also returning.

Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, meanwhile, is now Dewey, having previously been seen in The Handmaid’s Tale, Wynonna Earp, Nightmare Alley and Spiral.

This new run is due to land on Disney+ and Hulu on 10 April, and it’s short and sweet, comprising of only four episodes. Series creator Linwood Bloomer is back on writing and executive producing duties, and the cast also welcomes Vaughan Murrae as youngest sibling Kelly.

The initial reaction to this new trailer has been very positive, with fans flooding the comments section on Hulu’s Instagram page to express their sheer excitement.

“My best tv series ever is back,” wrote one person, while another called it simply “GENIAL”.

“This is going to be the longest month of my whole life… can’t wait,” said another excited fan.

Malcolm in the Middle first ran for 151 episodes starting in January 2000, and this new bunch will arrive one month short of the finale’s 20th anniversary.

Speaking late last year, Muniz called the revival “probably one of the best times I’ve ever had on a set”.

“When I was doing Malcolm 20 years ago, I was a kid,” he told People. “So I didn’t know what it was gonna be like [to return] – if it was going to be easy to be Malcolm, if it was gonna be awkward back with the cast. And not to sound like cliché, but it was as if not a single day went by.”

During the original run, the now-40-year-old picked up an Emmy nomination for Lead Actor for his work as Malcolm, while Cranston was nominated three times in Supporting Actor.

Kaczmarek was nominated in Lead Actress every single season, while the late Cloris Leachman – who played her mother – was nominated for Guest Actress six times, winning twice.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair airs on 10 April on Disney+ and Hulu.
