Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has sent a blunt reminder to Luis Diaz after the Colombian left Liverpool for the Bavarian giants. The forward called time on his Reds career last week as he signed for the Bundesliga outfit in a deal worth up to £65.5m.

The 28-year-old made his first appearance for Bayern last weekend, coming off the bench to win a penalty as they beat Lyon 2-1 in a pre-season friendly.

But despite the promising start to his time with the Bavarians, Bayern legend Matthaus has shot down Diaz by pointing out he was not the German outfit’s first-choice target as he took aim at the club’s sporting director, Max Eberl.

“FCB sporting director Max Eberl still has a lot of work to do…” he told Sky Germany. “After the transfer of Luiz Diaz, Max Eberl said: ‘At the moment, we’re very happy with our squad; we’ve done our work for now’.

“Diaz is a good player, but he wasn’t the first choice for that position. They also received rejections, and Eberl mustn’t forget that.

“You can’t just sit back and relax in your job anyway. There are still things you’d like to do, both on one side and the other.”

After signing Diaz, Eberl said: “Luis Díaz is a player with international experience, enormous quality, terrific skills and great reliability who will help our team immediately.

“We’re delighted we’ve been able to bring him to FC Bayern. Transfers like this work when every cog in the machine fits together. Our fans can look forward to watching an exceptional player.

“It was clear we wanted to do something in attack. We wanted pace, one-v-one ability and consistency. We then landed on Luis fairly quickly. Luis brings everything we need.

“Then we wanted to make the transfer happen. For a transfer like this between two big clubs, all parties must come together.

“It soon became clear that Lucho wanted to come to us. We’re very happy that he’s here, he’ll have an instant impact. He’s already performed at the highest level.”

Bayern had an initial transfer enquiry and offer rejected by Liverpool prior to agreeing a £65.5m deal.

“I’m very happy to have played my first game for Bayern,” he said. “I felt good on the pitch. I’ll get used to the team over time.

“I think personally I played well but over time I will fit in better with the team and I will feel more comfortable. I had chances to score, but hopefully I’ll score next time.

“My first impressions are incredible. I feel very comfortable here. It’s still the first few days, I’ve not been here long.

“But I will integrate myself into the team more and more. I will get to know them better and better so that we can connect better and help the team to our full ability.

“I’m very happy with my new team-mates and being able to play here at FC Bayern.”
