Hull KR suffered a shock defeat to Hull KR on the opening night of Super League.

Head coach Willie Peters admits his Hull KR side are still finding their feet under Super League’s new 2026 rules.

The competition has introduced fresh ruck interpretations designed to speed up the game and deliver more on-field action. And while the Robins finally got their season firing with a comfortable 32-6 win over Huddersfield Giants, Peters says there’s still plenty of work to do.

“The game has obviously changed, and we need to adapt in the best way possible,” he said.

“Training needs to mirror how the game looks. Momentum swings in games can be huge, whether you’ve got it or lost it. We need to work out the best way to hold onto it, and how to swing it back when we don’t.”

After a shock season-opening defeat to York Knights and a Las Vegas nightmare, Hull KR ran in six tries to cruise over an injury-hit Huddersfield in Super League round four.

That win could spark their title defence across 2026, while Rovers return to West Yorkshire today aiming to progress to the last 16 of the prestigious Challenge Cup as holders.

“In terms of attitude and effort, I thought it was closer to where it needs to be,” Peters added, with his side scoring six tries against Luke Robinson’s struggling outfit.

“We want to maintain that, but just being able to handle momentum swings better as the weeks progress. That’s an area we want to keep focussing on.

“The teams that still have gritty defence and the attitude to defend their try-line like it means everything to them are the ones that end up winning the games, I feel.

“I think there’s room for improvement, and it’s up to us coaches to see where we can get better. It’s about getting the most out of our training sessions, to then put the players in the best positions where they feel comfortable in games.”
