Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson has revealed how the club came to sign former Warrington Wolves man Connor Wrench.

Wrench’s return to the game came as a surprise to many, given that he announced his retirement from the sport aged 23 back in August of last season.

The centre/winger ended his first stint in the top flight with 49 Super League appearances, as well as short-term spells at both Newcastle and North Wales Crusaders.

However, a change of heart has seen Wrench want to return to the sport he loves, a decision that was music to the ears of the Huddersfield boss.

“I got wind that he was potentially going to come back into the game,” Robinson said when asked how the move came about. “I’ve always been an admirer of the way he plays the game.

“He’s young, he’s English, he’s extremely fast, and the way the game is going at this moment in time, the game is speeding up, so somebody like him is a real asset to any team.

Wrench was wanted by a number of “big clubs” according to the Giants boss, so offering him a deal and getting him signed on the dotted line was somewhat of a priority for Huddersfield.

“I jumped at the opportunity,” he explained. “I spoke to him about where I seem him fitting in with the club.

“I gave him an insight to where we are at this moment in time, squad wise, injury front, but I also gave him a little bit of an idea, when we get players, back, of where I see the club going when we have a fully fit squad.

Whilst Wrench looks to be Robinson’s ideal recruit in this early stage, the boss won’t get to see his new man in action just yet, with the outside back missing this week’s game against Hull KR in the Challenge Cup.

“I was speaking to the head of performance, speaking to the physios, and it would be foolish of me [to select him at this stage]…

“I’d love to have thrown him in last week, I’d love to throw him in this week, but when somebody hasn’t trained… he hasn’t got the load through his legs.

“I wouldn’t want to throw him in again and he just instantly get injured and join the rest of the 15 lads. Once he does play, I want to keep him in.”
