Filming has officially begun on Mike Flanagan’s reboot of The Exorcist.

Previously described as a “fresh, bold” new take of the iconic 53-year-old horror movie’s franchise, Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist has assembled an impressive cast that features Scarlett Johansson, Hamnet breakout star Jacobi Jupe, Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Carl Lumbly, Sasha Calle, Samantha Sloyan, Benjamin Pajak, Kate Siegel, Gil Bellows, John Gallagher Jr., Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, and Carla Gugino. It is set to be released in theaters on March 12, 2027 via Universal.

On Instagram, Flanagan has now confirmed that The Exorcist production is underway in New York City with an image of a film slate and the caption “Day 1… here we go. #theexorcist.” As indicated on the slate, Flanagan is directing, with cinematography by Michael Fimognari, who previously worked with the filmmaker on Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. In the comments, other Flanagan stars who are not part of the film express their enthusiasm, including Katee Sackhoff and Siena Agudong, both of whom are in the upcoming Carrie miniseries on Prime Video. In addition to directing, the new Exorcist’s screenplay is written by Flanagan, and he is executive producing as well. It is also produced by Jason Blum via his Blumhouse Productions banner. The Exorcist: Martyrs is a rumored title, but this has not been officially confirmed yet, nor have any concrete plot or character details, other than that it will be a brand-new story. It will be the seventh film in the long-running horror franchise and the first since the release of The Exorcist: Believer in 2023.

The Exorcist’s filming start comes only months after production wrapped on the new adaptation of Carrie in October 2025. The aforementioned Agudong plays Sue Snell in the eight-episode miniseries, while Sackhoff’s role remains under wraps. Sloyan, who is also part of The Exorcist’s cast, is playing Margaret White, the mother of the titular Carrie White, who will be portrayed by Summer H. Howell. Siegel is another actor who is in both The Exorcist and Carrie, although it is unknown who she is playing in either project.

Flanagan’s The Exorcist is a temporary departure from adapting numerous Stephen King stories. Along with Prime Video’s Carrie, he is working on a television series of King’s The Dark Tower books, a new adaptation of The Mist, and has previously helmed Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck. From King to Flanagan’s many horror shows on Netflix, he has become one of the leading creators in the genre, which only creates more anticipation for his new take on The Exorcist.
