Prince William has shared an emotional tribute to his mother, the late Princess Diana, on Mother’s Day with a moving post and unseen photo. The Prince of Wales, like millions around the country, is celebrating the women in his life on the important day, and will no doubt be planning something special for Princess Kate.

But William has also paid homage to one special figure: his late mother. Taking to social media this morning, William shared a photo of the two, with the caption reflecting how he is thinking of Diana “today and everyday”. This year Diana would’ve been celebrating her 65th birthday.

The caption reads: “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W”.

The photo of the pair was taken at Highgrove in 1984, and shows the late Diana with a young Prince William in a field of flowers. William was just 15 years old when his mother died after a car crash in Paris in 1997.

William has often spoken about how he tells his own children – George, Charlotte and Louis – about their late grandmother, and how he has followed in her footsteps with a lot of his charity work, particularly his work with homelessness charities.

Prince William won’t be the only one remembering his late mother today, as his children also use Mother’s Day to honour the grandmother they never got to meet. Several years ago, William shared some cards created for Diana by the kids – with Charlotte’s containing a particularly touching message.

Her message was on a fuchsia-coloured card with a hand-drawn multi-coloured heart. And in it, she made sure to mention how much her dad William misses his mum.

Charlotte wrote: “Dear Granny Diana, I am thinking of you on mother’s day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love Charlotte xxxxxxxxx”. Meanwhile, older brother George used cursive writing on bright green card to say: “Dear granny Diana, Happy happy Mother’s Day. I love you very much and think of you always, sending lots of love from George xxxxx.”

In the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William spoke candidly saying he is committed to ensuring his children know all about their late grandmother.

He expressed his desire for his kids to “know who she was and that she existed” and shared how he “constantly” talks to his children “about Granny Diana” at bedtime so that they know “there are two grandmothers in their lives”. The future king said: “We’ve got more photos up around the house now of her and we talk about her a bit.”

He added: “It’s hard because obviously Catherine didn’t know her so she cannot really provide that level of detail, so I regularly put George and Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try to remind them that there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives. So it’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”
