York Knights

A York Knights star was taken to hospital due to injury during the club’s Challenge Cup victory over Keighley Cougars.

The Knights progressed through to the quarter finals of the Cup with ease, securing a 56-10 win over the Championship side, however they failed to come through the game unscathed.

Centre Sam Wood suffered a poke to the eye in the first half, and was forced off the field as a result, the former Castleford and Hull KR man departed the LNER Community Stadium early, and had a trip to the infirmary to get checked out.

“We’ve just sent him off to hospital just basically to make sure that there’s no damage to that eyeball,” York boss Mark Applegarth confirmed post-match.

“It settled down quite a lot after half-time but with Thursday in mind and without sounding disrespectful to Keighley, we felt we were in a comfortable enough spot to not risk him.”

Wood has had a brilliant start to life at his new club, and was a key part of the club’s round one victory over Hull KR, where he crossed twice. He also managed to get on the scoresheet before leaving the field this weekend.

York Knights suffer half-back blow

Another York star is also set for a period on the sidelines, as Liam Harris suffered a hamstring injury.

The half-back was awarded the player of the match award, and put in a sublime showing as he scored twice and kicked five goals, however towards the end of the tie pulled up in some discomfort.

Applegarth has confirmed the injury to his key playmaker, but despite it being a blow it brings opportunity for another man in the side.

“It looks like he’s done his hamstring,” said the boss. “It’s unfortunate for Liam but unfortunately that’s part of the game, isn’t it?

“We’ll dust off, reassess and hopefully it’s not too bad…  He’ll probably have a scan on it early next week.

“I’ve just literally seen him coming off limping and he said he felt something  even before he caught the ball he felt it pull, so that’s never a good sign.

“[It is a blow] but it’s a good opportunity for Danny Richardson to step up and show what he’s about too.

“Gutted for Liam in that sense because I know how much he’s been working to perform at this level.

But, as I’ve just said, it’s unfortunately a cruel sport in that sense, isn’t it? Life moves on pretty quick, doesn’t it?

“We’ll reassess and name a squad on Tuesday ready for Thursday.”
