Mothering Sunday, the 2021 British period drama that features Olivia Colman leading an all-star cast, is now available to watch for free on Channel 4’s streaming service. Based on Graham Swift’s novel of the same name, the film marks the English-language debut of acclaimed French director Eva Husson.

Colman stars alongside Colin Firth, The Crown‘s Josh O’Connor, Odessa Young (The Staircase) and the late Glenda Jackson, making her first film appearance in over 30 years.

Mothering Sunday follows Jane Fairchild (Young) a maid for the Niven family who has an affair with Paul Sheringham (O’Connor), the son of their wealthy neighbours. It examines the impact their final meeting on Mothering Sunday in 1924 has on her life and career.

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a certified Fresh rating of 77% out of 137 critics’ reviews.

The Los Angeles Times wrote that the film: “Shimmers with confident filmmaking, fine performances and a belief in the melancholic resonance of a lovers’ sanctuary as something difficult to let go of.”

Meanwhile The Times called it: “A thoughtful and deeply affecting meditation on the loneliness of the lifelong writer.”

The Hollywood Reporter remarked that it “may be one of the sexiest heterosexual period dramas in some time”.

Over on IMDB fans were equally enthusiastic, especially over the four lead actors’ performances.

One fan wrote: “The scenery is incredible, as is the performances of Colin Firth and Olivia Colman.”

Another described it as “a beautifully written, beautifully acted and beautifully shot piece of work,” adding: “The understated performances from Colin Firth and Olivia Colman are a delight”.

While a third wrote: “The acting by both Young and O’Connor is excellent, and they have a natural chemistry that makes their scenes together sizzle.”

Another viewer hailed the film as “a true masterpiece,” adding: “Eva Husson delivers once again with an incredible film, and the great cast of actors only serves to make it even better.”

Mothering Sunday is available to stream now on Channel 4.
