The hit BBC comedy Ghosts aired its final episode in 2023, but fans were soon treated to the news that it wasn’t goodbye forever. Lionsgate UK confirmed that a feature film was in the works back in February, and now the release date has been confirmed — and it’s arriving just in time for the spookiest season of the year.

The film, titled Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, is scheduled to bow in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on Friday, 23 October.

While the exact plot is currently being kept under wraps, filming is already underway. Production has returned to the iconic West Horsley Place, the real-life manor that serves as Button House, along with various locations across the South East of England.

The transition from the small screen to the multiplex is a milestone for the series, which ended its five-season run on BBC One as the UK’s most-watched comedy of 2023. The finale drew in a staggering 7.2 million viewers, proving that the appetite for Alison, Mike, and their eccentric spectral housemates is as alive as ever.

Producers for Monumental Television, Alison Owen and Debra Hayward, shared their excitement about the jump to cinema, promising a scale that does justice to the beloved characters. “After its enormous success as a television series, we are thrilled that audiences will get to experience Ghosts on the big screen,” they said. “It will be an unmissable event.”

Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond have penned the script and will serve as executive producers, ensuring the show’s signature wit remains intact. They are also confirmed to star alongside series leads Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe, with Lolly Adefope also returning to the ensemble.

Marie-Claire Benson, EVP at Lionsgate UK, noted the film’s potential for a family-friendly Halloween outing, stating: “We’re excited to give families something they can enjoy together this Halloween—and what better way to celebrate than seeing everyone’s favourite ghosts on the big screen, to capture the spirit of the season.”

Behind the camera, the project is in safe hands with director Simon Hynd at the helm. With the US version of the show already commissioned for a sixth season and international adaptations in France, Germany, and Australia, there’s plenty of Ghosts to go around.

Ghosts: The Possession of Button House is out in UK and Irish cinemas on 23 October 2026.
