The Edge of Love, the wartime period drama starring Cillian Murphy, has been added to Prime Video in the UK and Ireland.

Originally released in 2008, the film examines the real-life friendship between Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys), his wife Caitlin Thomas (Sienna Miller) and their close friends, Vera (Keira Knightley) and William Killick (Murphy).

While the characters are based on real people and events, The Edge of Love offers a fictional account of their respective relationships and time together along the Welsh seashore. Penned by screenwriter Sharman Macdonald, who is also Knightley’s mother, the romantic drama received mixed reviews and currently holds a score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The Edge of Love holds a lot of promise in its first hour and never completely falls apart, but it’s ultimately not the movie it might have been,” wrote the San Francisco Chronicle.

“While the period drama has several redeeming features, tonally it’s all over the map, veering between artsy stylisation and hum-drum, sometimes almost twee melodrama,” added Variety.

Conversely, the New York Post posited: “The movie makes for an engaging enough period piece.”

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter noted, “The film succeeds as a deeply involving study of men and women caught up in a whirlwind beyond their control.”

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Knightley and Miller revealed what attracted them to the project. “I thought it was a really beautiful story. You very rarely see films that really study friendship and rivalry and the complexities of a group of friends and how they can implode and how they manipulate each other,” she said.

“I thought it was completely fascinating. The fact that it was based on a true event and that Dylan Thomas happened to be one of the friends, I thought that was very exciting.”

Homing in on the dynamic between Vera and Caitlin, Miller added: “It’s really rare to find women who are well written, let alone two in the same film. So it was kind of bliss, and to work with Keira because we’re really close.”

The Edge of Love is now streaming on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland.
