Chelsea’s academy has been dealt a bittersweet blow with the news that Reggie Watson will miss the remainder of the campaign, prematurely ending a season where the 16-year-old evolved from a promising schoolboy onto the first-team radar.

Liam Rosenior has been very welcoming when it comes to giving academy players a chance at Chelsea.

Reggie Walsh, Shim Mheuka, Jesse Derry and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen have all featured in first-team training this season, with cup appearances coming for a couple of them.

Derry is an example of hard work paying off, with Rosenior giving him multiple opportunities in cup competitions and even featuring on the bench in the Champions League.

However, 16-year-old Reggie Watson isn’t as lucky after suffering an injury.

Do you think Chelsea should sack Liam Rosenior? Or are you willing to give him more time?🤔

Football analyst and scout Nathalia, who regularly covers the Chelsea youth team, has provided a bit of an update on Reggie Watson.

She states that Reggie Watson is out for the remainder of the season due to injury.

This will come as a blow for Liam Rosenior, who is a big fan of Watson. He has even allowed him to train with the Chelsea first team a few times, despite his young age.

“Reggie Watson has trained with us a few times and really impressed me.

“It’s scary given his age.”

DISCUSS: Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City 😱

Reggie Watson’s 2025/26 campaign has set the benchmark for academy progression.

At only 16, the composed midfielder emerged as a gem for Chelsea’s U18s, recording five goals and one assist across 15 appearances in the league and FA Youth Cup. Watson’s dead-ball specialist reputation was solidified by several match-winning free-kicks.

Watson’s rare maturity saw him fast-tracked into U19 UEFA Youth League action and multiple senior training sessions under Liam Rosenior, so this injury will be devastating for him more than anyone.
