The family of a mum battling meningitis after falling ill on holiday have given an update on her condition and made a statement to address questions over travel insurance.

Mother of one Jade Bird, 33, from Abergele was due to fly back from a short break in Tenerife last Wednesday. But she fell ill while in the airport.

She was rushed to hospital and a scan found an infection on her brain which developed into meningitis. It saw her placed in an induced coma.

Her sister in law Victoria Bird, and Jade’s mum Janine have flown out to Tenerife to be at her bedside and are desperate to bring her home. This saw a Gofundme has been started to support Jade, who works as a carer for vulnerable adults, and her family. They have already raised more than £12,000 towards a medical evacuation flight which could cost in excess of £50,000. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox

The family have now made a statement on Jade’s holiday insurance after questions over her travel cover after the Gofundme was started.

Vicky said Jade had paid for travel insurance and this was covering her treatment in an intensive care unit in Tenerife. She explained what the Gofundme money would be used for.

She said: “ICU in Tenerife costs around £4,000 a day without treatment and ventilation etc, as you can imagine the medical costs will be extremely high but are covered by her insurance.

“We are fundraising for a medical evacuation flight to be able to fly Jade home. Her insurance has stated they will not fund a flight.

“Her condition is something that is going to take a very long time to recover from and myself and her mum will struggle to stay here for months on end which is why we are trying to fly her home not because she doesn’t have insurance but because we we don’t want to leave her here.”

On her condition today, Vicky added: “Sedation is being reduced slowly, yesterday she was able to open her eyes slightly and communicate slightly through squeezing of hands. Her MRI came back, she still had swelling on the brain but no signs of seizures which is great news. They are hoping to reduce her sedation each day as long as she allows them too.”
