In a new interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Ryan Gosling, while promoting Project Hail Mary, had the chance to say a few words about his experience on the set of Star Wars: Starfighter, his trip to a galaxy far, far away that is coming to theaters in 2027.

Director Shawn Levy revealed a few months ago that Tom Cruise himself had visited the set one day and even directed a scene in the movie. Gosling was asked about this and confessed that it happened on the one day he wasn’t there. Here’s what he said:

“I wasn’t there, it was the one day I wasn’t there! I worked on that movie the whole time, I get one day off… And Shawn sends me a picture of him, and Tom Cruise, and Flynn [Gray, his co-star] in the mud. And he’s like, ‘Yeah, Tom Cruise flew his helicopter into set’. They were just shooting, and they heard a helicopter, and they had to cut. And it’s just Tom Cruise, he lands in the middle of set, he takes a camera, and just starts shooting the action scene. There’s like a shot of him in the mud shooting Flynn…”

Gosling was announced to be a part of the movie during the Mandalorian and Grogu panel at Star Wars Celebration 2025. As part of the announcement, Kathleen Kennedy wanted to show how Star Wars has been in Ryan Gosling’s life for a long time, by showing a picture of his Star Wars-themed childhood bedsheets. In the interview, Gosling admitted that he actually didn’t watch the movies until much later in life, but the sheets survived all of these years, and he actually brought them to set “for inspiration”:

“I didn’t see it until very late. But I had Star Wars sheets. The first sheets I ever had were Star Wars [sheets], and I had them in my trailer when I made the movie. [Horowitz laughs.] Why is that weird? Don’t make that weird! So I still have the childhood sheets. My mom kept them; I didn’t keep them. When I told my mom I was doing the movie, she was like ‘I still have the sheets! So I had them for inspiration…’”

Gosling stars in Star Wars: Starfighter alongside Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Amy Adams, and more. The film takes flight on May 28, 2027. Check out the Star Wars part of the interview below:

Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as movies from Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
