Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos said Saturday the government will take additional economic support measures as the country faces what he called the most difficult crisis in recent years.
Speaking on MEGA TV, Theodorikakos warned that inflationary pressures pose the greatest risk to citizens, singling out diesel prices as a particular concern given their effect on transportation and product costs. “It is certain that measures beyond the price cap will be required,” he said, adding that the duration of the crisis and broader economic planning must be factored in.
Theodorikakos defended an existing cap on profit margins as an emergency anti-profiteering measure supported by a large majority of Greeks, while calling on businesses to reduce their average profits during the difficult period. The minister cited regional instability in the Middle East – a major energy-producing area and trade corridor between Europe and Asia – as a key driver of the crisis, noting that Europe has shown inconsistent responses.
On domestic politics, Theodorikakos expressed confidence that the ruling New Democracy party would win the next elections outright, while dismissing the political prospects of new opposition movements.
