Glasgow City Council has issued a new update on the gradual Union Corner building demolition following the devastating fire that reduced it to rubble. The most recent announcement from the council, issued yesterday (March 20), confirmed that the slow demolition of the remaining facade was to be complete by the end of the day, with further cleanup work to continue today (March 21).
While Glasgow Central Station is to see its Hope Street exit reopen tomorrow (March 22), the safety cordon around the ruined Victorian building – which had stood at Union Corner for 175 years before it went up in flames – is to remain in place while the site is cleared of debris and rubble.
Contractors are to work from 7am – 7pm every day until the site is cleared, though it has not yet been confirmed how long it will take to complete the cleanup and fully reopen Gordon Street to the public.
Large vehicles will be on site to remove the remnants of the iconic Glasgow building that tragically burnt down overnight after the devastating blaze on March 8, which had begun in a vape shop.

The council said in its latest update: “Remainder of the façade should be complete by end of today [March 20]. There will be no reduction of the cordon at this time, as the next phase will be removal of the rubble on site and large vehicles will still be in the area, therefore the safety cordon will remain in place for public safety and access.
“Now that the dangerous building structures’ demolition is near completion, work on site will now be carried out from tomorrow [March 21] onwards 7am – 7pm daily until the site is cleared.
“The 24hr working was in place to carry out the demolition as safely and quickly as possible.
“Security – backed up by police colleagues – will be in place around the cordon over the weekend, and we would like to remind the public to follow instructions around the cordon for their safety.
“Please keep following Network Rail and train operators for updates to Central Station and travel timetables.”
