Spider-Man villain Jon Bernthal has said action scenes shot in Scotland for the latest instalment of the Marvel franchise are some of the best ever filmed.

The star reprises his role as brutal antihero Punisher for upcoming movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which brought Holywood to Scotland in August.

Huge crowds gathered to watch Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker, performing aerial stunts amid explosions and NYPD car crashes

Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Mail Bernthal, 49, said: “The scenes we filmed in Scotland are the best action scenes I have ever been a part of, for me they are some of the best action scenes in any superhero movie ever.

“Obviously this is a Marvel movie and I am limited in how much I can share – but there is a confrontation between Spiderman and The Punisher on the streets of Glasgow that fans are not going to want to miss.

“There has been a lot of superhero filming in Scotland and from my experience it’s not hard to work out why. There is a real rawness, a real darkness to scenes that filming in Scotland adds.

“The studio could have chosen to recreate New York using green screens – but choosing Glasgow was by far the better option. As an actor it gives a real authenticity to what you are doing.”

The Punisher – aka Frank Castle – also revealed what it was like to work with London-born Holland, 29, on the set.

He said: “Working with Tom is always a pleasure. People see these great movies he puts out, but what they don’t see is his drive. These movies, these incredible scenes, they don’t just happen. They take blood, sweat, and tears.

“Following Brand New Day, I was working on a Punisher special for Disney Plus, and it gave me a lot of inspiration.

Brand New Day has a darker feel, filming in Scotland had a real gothic feel to it, and I continued with that when working on The Punisher. “

Fans of the Spider-man franchise won’t need to wait much longer.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which also stars Zendaya, is set to be released on July 31 this year.
