The absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid’s starting lineup for tonight’s Madrid derby raised immediate questions – particularly given the scale of the fixture and his recent involvement.

Alexander-Arnold had started in Real Madrid’s midweek win over Manchester City at the Etihad, making his place in the side for such a crucial LaLiga clash appear likely.

But when the team news was released ahead of tonight’s game at the Bernabeu, Alexander-Arnold was named among the substitutes.

His name featured alongside other high-profile stars such as Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, however they were both deemed unfit to start.

The decision to bench Trent Alexander-Arnold came as a surprise, especially with Dani Carvajal preferred at right-back for a match that could prove decisive in the title race.

Real Madrid currently sit second in LaLiga and are looking to close the gap on leaders Barcelona, who extended their advantage to seven points after beating Rayo Vallecano earlier in the day.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, remain strong opposition despite sitting outside the title race, with Diego Simeone’s side still firmly competing for a UEFA Champions League place.

However, the reasoning behind Alexander-Arnold’s omission has now emerged.

According to Marca presenter Juan Ignacio Garcia-Ochoa, the defender was dropped after arriving late to training, prompting head coach Alvaro Arbeloa to take disciplinary action.

Arbeloa is understood to have made the decision as part of a firm stance on standards within the squad, opting for Carvajal in response.

The development adds to what has been a difficult period for Alexander-Arnold.

The 26-year-old was also left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming international break, marking another high-profile omission in quick succession.

While he remains available from the bench and could still feature in the derby, the situation represents an unusual moment in his season — particularly given his status and experience at the highest level.

For a player of Alexander-Arnold’s calibre, being left out of a fixture of this magnitude sends a clear message.

How he responds, both in the short term and over the remainder of the season, could prove significant for his role at Real Madrid moving forward.
