Nicky Butt reckons Chelsea should consider trying to lure Frank Lampard back to Stamford Bridge in the summer as pressure continues to grow on the Blues’ current head coach, Liam Rosenior.

Lampard, a Chelsea legend and the club’s all-time leading goalscorer from his playing days, enjoyed an 18-month spell as manager between 2019 and 2021. The 47-year-old has rehabilitated his reputation following a damaging caretaker stint back at the Blues in 2023 with Coventry City, who are nine points clear at the top of the Championship and on course to clinch promotion to the Premier League.

While Lampard is enjoying life in the second-tier, Chelsea are in the midst of a malaise under Rosenior, who was appointed on a six-year contract back in January.

The highly-rated 41-year-old has just endured his toughest week at the helm, with his side being brutally eliminated from the Champions League 8-2 on aggregate by Paris Saint-Germain before a bruising 3-0 defeat away to Everton at the weekend.

And as scrutiny on Rosenior continues to grow, Butt has suggested that Chelsea should consider giving Lampard another call – and that the former England midfielder would be well positioned to make a success of things if given another crack at the job. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt said: “Do you think if Frank Lampard gets promotion with Coventry they could go back in for Frank?

“He got the job too early the first time I think and he had the transfer embargo so he had to use a lot of young players.

“It wouldn’t be a stupid thing to go and get Frank Lampard back in charge of Chelsea for me. He’s done a great job at Coventry.

Liam Rosenior branded the performance his most disappointing as Chelsea boss

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has endured a nightmare week

“He’s got a bit more experience now and he probably made a few mistakes the first time around. People need to understand that transfer embargo means you have to rely on loads of young players, that must have been difficult for him.

“He would be a totally different manager now. I think Lampard would find it easier working with better players, it would be easier for him to get his messages across to more technical players.

“If Frank went back into Chelsea, with all the experience he’s got now, I think he would do an amazing job, I really do.”
