Dan Hiscocks may not yet be a household name in Welsh rugby, but that could soon change.

The 25-year-old scrum-half is quietly tearing up the English Championship and attracting serious interest from both the Welsh regions and the Gallagher Prem — at a time when concerns over the depth of talent at number nine in Wales continue to grow.

Hiscocks was a Wales age-grade international and a member of the Ospreys academy before failing to earn a contract and being let go.

While things did not go his way back home in Wales, instead of feeling sorry for himself, he has climbed the ladder of the English game and is now undoubtedly Cornish Pirates’ standout player, having also featured for Ealing Trailfinders.

The English Championship has long been a fertile breeding ground for future internationals.

Back in March 2024, Ellis Mee lined up at full-back for a Nottingham side who suffered a 52-26 defeat at Ealing, yet 10 months later the 21-year-old was called up by Warren Gatland to represent Wales in the Six Nations after an impressive start to the season with the Scarlets.

Hiscocks is another player who has excelled in the Championship and now looks ready for a shot at the big time, whether that be in the Gallagher Premiership or back home in Wales.

The former Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera pupil has played 53 consecutive games for the Pirates and has also made an impact against top-tier opposition in the Premiership Rugby Cup.

Hiscocks is currently the highest-scoring scrum-half in the Championship with 11 tries in 20 games, while he also leads the league for retained box-kick assists.

He is known for his dynamism and slick service, while also posing a significant running threat and possessing the ability to create try-scoring opportunities out of nothing.

In Welsh rugby, there is growing concern about the lack of quality scrum-halves coming through the system.

There are plenty of number nines who are technically solid, but few with genuine x-factor, aside from Dragons scrum-half Che Hope.

Of course, there is a significant step up between the Championship and the United Rugby Championship or Gallagher Premiership, but Hiscocks’ high-class performances have not gone unnoticed by clubs in the top tier.

The dual-qualified player would be a shrewd acquisition for one of Wales’ four professional clubs for the 2026/27 season as a squad option.

Hiscocks could be a smart signing for the Scarlets, given Gareth Davies is approaching the latter stages of his career, while he could also offer something different to the Dragons squad.

The 25-year-old has also captained the Pirates, who are fifth in the Championship table, for the majority of the season.

“I want to play at the highest level and I’d like to play for Wales one day,” Hiscocks told WalesOnline last year. “That’s always been my aspiration and what I’ve always wanted to do.

“The big aspiration is to get an opportunity higher up whether that’s in the Premiership or whether that’s coming back to a Welsh region.

“I think going back to a Welsh region would be the number one aspect for me. Although I’m English qualified all I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid was play for Wales.”

Whatever Welsh rugby’s future looks like be that four professional sides or three there will undoubtedly be a focus on signing Welsh qualified players.

While the likes of Dafydd Jenkins, Deian Gwynne, Max Llewellyn, Josh Hathaway, Archie Griffin and Louie Hennessey will be at the top of the list Hiscocks should also be considered.

With Welsh rugby searching for greater spark and depth at scrum-half, Hiscocks’ rise feels particularly timely.

Having proven himself as one of the Championship’s most consistent performers, the next step now seems inevitable, and whether that opportunity comes in the Gallagher Premiership or back in Wales, it may not be long before his name is far more widely known.
